Conexus launches construction of EUR 1.9 million biomethane injection point in Rēzekne

The unified gas transmission and storage system operator “Conexus Baltic Grid” AS (“Conexus”) has commenced the construction of Latvia’s second publicly accessible biomethane injection point, “Rēzekne”, with design and construction works carried out by SIA “INTRA-GT”. The total investment in the project will reach EUR 1.9 million, and the biomethane injection point is provisionally planned to be commissioned in less than a year.

The biomethane injection point “Rēzekne” is being developed to promote the integration of renewable energy into Latvia’s energy system and to encourage the use of local renewable energy resources in the gas transmission system.

SIA “INTRA-GT” has been awarded the right to carry out full-cycle construction works for the facility through an open negotiated procedure, including design, manufacturing and delivery of technological equipment to the site, construction works, as well as installation of the injection point and its connection to the natural gas transmission system. The contractor will also be responsible for performance testing of the biomethane injection point and training of personnel.

By the end of 2026, it is planned to complete the development of the construction site and install the main technological equipment. In early 2027, acceptance testing, staff training, and commissioning of the facility are planned. As part of the construction works, the surrounding infrastructure will also be improved, including the construction of access roads and engineering networks.

Once completed, the biomethane injection point “Rēzekne” will operate in automatic mode, ensuring automated reduction of the pressure of delivered biomethane, gas heating, injection into the natural gas transmission system, as well as gas metering and quality control.

The planned biomethane injection point “Rēzekne” will be located in Rēzekne Municipality, Ozolmuiža Parish. It will be the second publicly accessible biomethane injection point in Latvia. The first biomethane injection point, “Džūkste”, was inaugurated on 28 July 2025 in Džūkste Parish, Tukums Municipality.

Biomethane is a renewable energy source produced from organic waste and agricultural by-products. By integrating biomethane into the gas transmission system, “Conexus” promotes the use of green energy, supports sustainable development goals, and enhances the efficient use of local resources.

The project is being implemented with co-financing from the European Regional Development Fund, in accordance with the implementation rules of measure 2.6.1.1 “Promotion of Renewable Energy – Biomethane” under Specific Objective 2.6.1 “Promote the development of energy interconnections and related transmission, distribution, storage and support infrastructure, as well as the protection of critical energy infrastructure and deployment of charging infrastructure” within the European Union Cohesion Policy Programme for 2021–2027.
