Conexus: Natural gas volumes transported in Latvia increased by 18%

Fluctuations in electricity production volumes have affected natural gas consumption in Latvia, which decreased by 10% in the first quarter reaching 3.8 TWh, according to the results of the unified gas transmission and storage system operator Conexus Baltic Grid ("Conexus") for the first three months of 2025. At the same time, the total volume of natural gas transported in Latvia increased by 18%, reflecting the significant role of the company's infrastructure at the regional level.

Conexus' turnover in the reporting period reached EUR 26.3 million, which is 12% less than in the corresponding period last year.

At the end of the reporting period - 31 March 2025 - the Inčukalns Underground Gas Storage (UGS) had 9.3 TWh of stored natural gas (including 1.8 TWh of energy security reserves), which is 16% less than at this time last year.

It should be noted that in the first three months of this year, 0.04 TWh of biomethane produced in Latvia was injected into the Latvian gas system. Despite the decrease in natural gas consumption, the total volume of natural gas transported in Latvia has increased to 8.6 TWh, which is 18% more than in the same period last year.

In the first three months of 2025, Conexus has secured uninterrupted natural gas supplies for the needs of Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Finland. Natural gas supplies from the Inčukalns UGS reached 7 TWh, which is 3% more than last year, while 1.6 TWh were received from Lithuania, which is 3 times more than in the corresponding period last year.

"Conexus continues to play a key role in ensuring the uninterrupted and secure flow of natural gas across the region. The 18% increase in transported gas volumes and the stability of supply to Lithuania, Estonia and Finland confirm the importance of our infrastructure in the energy security of the Baltic and Nordic countries," said Uldis Bariss, Chairman of the Conexus Management Board.

EBITDA decreased by 14% to €20.2 million in the reporting period, while profit was €15.7 million, 14% lower than in the first quarter of 2024.
