Conexus: Volume of transmitted natural gas increases, consumption in Latvian market declines
Although the volume of transmitted natural gas in Latvia reached 13.9 terawatt-hours (TWh) in the first six months of this year—8% more than in the same period last year—natural gas consumption in the Latvian market continues to decline. In the first half of the year, consumption was 4.8 TWh, which is 3% less than in the corresponding period of the previous year.
According to the financial report of the unified gas transmission and storage system operator Conexus Baltic Grid (Conexus) for the first half of 2025, the company’s turnover reached €41.7 million, which is 17% less than in the same period last year.
During this period, Conexus continued to supply natural gas to Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and Finland. The gas flow in the company’s system was mainly composed of deliveries from the Inčukalns Underground Gas Storage, which amounted to 8.1 TWh in the first half of the year. Additionally, deliveries from Lithuania reached 5 TWh, which is 2.4 times more than in the same period last year.
Meanwhile, natural gas consumption in Latvia during the reporting period was 4.8 TWh, a 3% decrease compared to the first half of 2024.
“Although gas consumption in the Latvian market is lower than in previous reporting periods, the volume of transmitted natural gas confirms the role of Conexus-managed infrastructure in ensuring the continuity and security of energy supply across the region. We are the company’s regional connector, consistently ensuring the stability of energy flows,” said Uldis Bariss, Chairman of the Board of Conexus.
The 2025/2026 natural gas withdrawal season ended on April 30, 2025, during which 14.4 TWh of active natural gas was withdrawn from Inčukalns UGS—14% more than in the previous season.
