Conexus: The volume of natural gas stored in the facility exceeds the needs of the Latvian market
The unified natural gas transmission and storage system operator AS “Conexus Baltic Grid” (Conexus) announces that the natural gas withdrawal season began on October 15, 2025. The volume of natural gas stored in the facility has reached 14.5 TWh, which accounts for approximately 82% of the reserved capacity for the 2025/2026 storage cycle.
The total technical capacity of the storage facility for this season is 24.9 TWh. Latvia’s annual natural gas consumption is approximately 8 TWh, meaning that the volume of natural gas stored in the Inčukalns underground gas storage facility exceeds the needs of the local market.
During the natural gas injection season, 30.6% of the total gas volume entering the Latvian and Estonian gas network was supplied from Finland, 68.1% from Lithuania, while 0.7% was biomethane produced in Latvia and 0.6% in Estonia.
It is important to emphasize that to promote the security and continuity of natural gas supply, gas injection into the Inčukalns underground storage facility continues even during the withdrawal season. This allows for more flexible use of system capacity and better adaptation to market needs. This has been made possible thanks to the largest modernization project of the Inčukalns underground gas storage facility to date, which has been underway since 2018 and is now nearing completion.
As part of the modernization, significant improvements have been made to the security and continuity of gas supply, and the facility’s capacity can now be used more flexibly and efficiently, strengthening energy supply security not only in Latvia but also in the Baltic and Finnish regions.
